The Paintings, Works on Paper and Sculpture Sales offer pictures from Britain, Europe and international artists, covering the 16th to 21st centuries: paintings, watercolours, drawings, prints, photographs, and sculptures are all sold by the department.
2017 saw the sale of pictures from a Private London Club, where a diverse range of paintings, prints and caricature drawings drew competitive bidding and a sale total of £217,620, with a sell-through rate of more than 90%.
In 2018, the department sold items from the collection of Dr Alan Borg C.B.E., former Senior Director of the V&A, and former Director of the Imperial War Museum. These included a group of designs for War Memorials, which were featured in a number of international publications.
The sales, overseen by Adrian Biddell since January 2023, now include biannual Fine Paintings, Works on Paper and Sculpture Auctions in June and December. Recent highlights include 'Mixed Flowers in a Black Jug' by Sir William Nicholson (British 1872-1949) which sold for £200,000, 'Madonna of 'The Miracle' with Self-Portait by Henri Gaudier-Brzeska (French 1891 - 1915) sold for £40,000 and 'Phyllis with a Bouquet of Flowers' by Elizabeth (Bessie) MacNicol (Scottish 1869 - 1904) sold for £17,500.
'Going to the Match' by Laurence Stephen Lowry (British 1887 - 1976) sold for £30,000 and 'Rad Lad II' by Lynn Chadwick (British 1914 - 2003) sold for £32,500. (All aforementioned results include BP)
In addition the department holds the popular and pioneering Artists Estates sales in October and March. These are titled 'From the Studio: Works from (number) Artists' Estates.
Finally, there are regular online auctions for affordable middle market Paintings and Works on Paper.
