Visit our exhibition of furniture and design by a “lost” icon of Art Deco. Betty Joel was one of Britain’s foremost furniture designers and businesswomen of the 1920s and 30s. But after achieving international fame through her eponymous brand, she turned her back on her career, never to re-visit it.
This exhibition of classic Betty Joel furniture and design explores her extraordinary rise from Hayling Island to glamorous shop and gallery in Knightsbridge. It has been curated by her great-nephew, auctioneer and art expert, Clive Stewart-Lockhart, who is also the author of a definitive new book to be launched during the exhibition.
Exhibition (entry is free)
1st April - 8th April
Mon - Fri - 9:30am - 5pm
Olympia Auctions, 25 Blythe Road, London W14 0PD (View Google Map)
The exhibition contains bookcases, cupboards, chairs, tables and lamps which will look familiar to many visitors but few will know of the remarkable woman who established this quintessential Art Deco style. Now, decades after she withdrew from public life, Betty Joel is achieving the wider fame that she deserves.
The new book, drawing on the author’s personal memories of his great-aunt, and hundreds of letters, diaries and ephemera, provides a complete picture of this remarkable woman and adds an important extra dimension to the exhibition.
“Betty Joel exhibited at Olympia every year from 1921 to 1938 so we are delighted to be hosting this beautifully curated collection of her work at Olympia Auctions, right next door to the great exhibition halls she would have known well.
Managing Director Thomas Del Mar comments “It is an honour to be working with Clive Stewart-Lockhart to rejuvenate the reputation of such a significant figure. We look forward to welcoming exhibition visitors and to hearing their reactions.”
