Portrait Miniatures
Portrait Miniatures have been sold at 25 Blythe Road within Matthew Barton Ltd’s series of auctions since November 2009.
The Miniatures department has sold examples by most of the classic English artists from Cooper, through Smart, Engleheart, Cosway and Plimer, but also has the expertise to deal with the full range of Continental Miniatures, including Boites à Miniatures. The biannual European and Asian Works of Art sales usually include a section devoted to this field.
Among the sale highlights are: a miniature of Welby Sherman, by George Richmond (1809-1896), circa 1827, which sold for £32,000; a miniature by Samuel Cooper dated 1649, which sold for £6,500; and a miniature of a young girl by John Smart which sold for £6,000.
