A RARE SOUTH INDIAN SWORD (KHANDA), 17TH CENTURY

with broad double-edged heavy blade swelling to a 'Cobra's head' tip, engraved steel hilt formed with a pair of moulded langets extending over the forte, the portion at the forte widening and down-curved with blade-catching lugs, dish-guard formed of a pair of D-shaped panels of V-section and with decorative notches at the apex, the outer surface decorated with linear designs and foliage (later red pigment), engraved up-turned cup-shaped pommel (now open at the top), and solid grip engraved with lines in the centre, 77.5 cm blade
