MATSYA RECOVERS THE VEDAS FROM DAMANAKA, KANGRA, CIRCA 1830

The scene is from a Dasavatara series, set during the time of the great deluge, when Damanaka, who has taken advantage of the chaos to steal the Vedas from Brahma and disappeared with them into the depths, is discovered hiding in a conch shell by Matsya. The god tackles the demon with his mace, while four figures representing the Vedas look on from dry land.
