A CARVED WOOD BUFFALO HEAD, KERALA, SOUTHERN INDIA, CIRCA 19TH CENTURY

of stylised form, with long, slightly curved pointed horns and srivatsa emblem between the eyes, along with various other markings, traces of colour in several places, 112cm length

Provenance: From the collection of the late A.J. (John) Lippitt (1928-2019), Hampshire. Acquired Gordon Reece Gallery, London, 5 February 1999 (a copy of the invoice is included with this lot).

This head originally formed part of a processional animal carried through a village during the harvest festival. For a similar example exhibited in London, see Michell 1992, no.8, p.133.
