A SOUTH INDIAN CEREMONIAL HATCHET (ARUVAL), 18TH/19TH CENTURY, PROBABLY KERALA

formed entirely of copper alloy, with hatchet blade fitted with seven rattles along the back-edge, decorated with raised linear moulding and scrolls at the forte on each face, hilt extending over the forte with a pair of small shaped langets, figure-of-eight shaped guard of low V-section,. Cylindrical grip decorated with a trellis design, and large disc pommel fitted with five further rattles, 36.0 cm overall
