the coconut with all-over low relief decoration of two roundels flanked by feathered patterning, to the obverse with a naval fouled anchor and surrounding inscription 'MARY BRISON 1806' within a berried laurel band, the reverse with a star of six lozenges, the face with paktong-set eyes and removeable stopper centring the gaping mouth with filed teeth, mounted on a copper spreading foot with geometric borders and lattice pierced band, 16cm high
This bugbear may have been carved by the naval rating Robert Brison (Westmeath 1772-1840 Portsea) for his wife Mary (née Sibley, married in 1803 at St Mary's Portsea), whilst serving with the Royal Navy in the Caribbean onboard HMS Acasta. HMS Acasta was a 40-gun Royal Navy fifth-rate frigate, which saw much service in the West Indies; by 12 January 1806 she was anchored in Carlisle Bay, Barbados, afterwards involved in the battle of Santo Domingo.
