The European Works of Art Auction specialises in the sale of silver, ceramics, sculpture, works of art, objects of vertu and portrait miniatures.

The silver section forms a considerable part of the biannual European Works of Art sales. Matthew Barton started in the silver department at Sotheby’s over thirty years ago and brings his experience to bear on a rich variety of items spanning from early spoons to 20th century designed pieces. As well as catering to the dedicated collector, the department affords opportunities to buyers at all levels.

Amongst recent highlights are: a large Edwardian silver presentation pilgrim flask by Carrington & Co. which sold for £15,500; a pair of Victorian parcel-gilt-silver and enamel ‘Graeco-Pompeian’ 1862 International Exhibition wine coolers by Elkington & Co., sold for £38,000 and a large Austrian enamel, silver and lapis lazuli figure of an ostrich, Vienna, late 19th century which sold for £15,000.

With a wealth of experience in a wide variety of ceramics from early maiolica through factories such as Chelsea, Sèvres and Meissen up to more recent works such as Wedgwood Fairyland lustre, we sell the whole range of European ceramics from the 16th to the 20th century.

We also sell  early sculpture through to 18th, 19th and 20th century works in bronze, marble, wood and other media, as well as stained glass, metalwork and treen.

Among the Objects of Vertu we have sold the finest gold boxes through to fans, enamels, silver smallwork, intaglio or cameo carvings and Russian Decorative Arts including Fabergé.

The miniatures we have sold are examples by most of the classic English artists from Cooper, through Smart, Engleheart, Cosway and Plimer, we also have the expertise to deal with the full range of Continental Miniatures, including Boites à Miniatures.

A recent client has commented 'I had the pleasure as a seller to choose Olympia Auctions to auction my collection, the team I dealt with were extremely professional and I have never experienced an auction house that put so much time and effort into publicising and cataloguing the collection which resulted in an extremely successful auction, many, many thanks to all the team I would definitely use them again.'
