As an art business student at Sotheby’s Institute of art, my internship at Olympia Auction House has been a journey of discovery, offering me a glimpse into the multifaceted world of art commerce. From assisting various departments to witnessing the exhilarating atmosphere of a live auction, every moment has been an enriching experience.
In my role as an intern, I had the privilege of supporting different departments within the auction house. Whether it was cataloguing or assisting in the everyday tasks, my tasks were as diverse as the artefacts themselves. This hands-on involvement provided me with invaluable insights into the inner workings of each department, allowing me to appreciate the intricacies involved in every aspect of the auction process.
One of the highlights of my internship was the opportunity to experience a live auction firsthand. The electrifying atmosphere, filled with anticipation and excitement, was unlike anything I had ever encountered. Witnessing the rapid-fire bidding and the thrill of acquiring prized possessions underscored the significance of the auction house as a hub of cultural exchange and commerce.
Throughout my internship, I found myself constantly learning and growing, thanks to the guidance of experienced mentors and colleagues. Whether it was learning about the historical significance of rare artefacts or understanding the market trends shaping the art bubble, each interaction broadened my understanding of the art world and its markets landscape.
As I look back on my internship experience, I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the auction house's mission while gaining valuable knowledge and skills. From assisting in day-to-day operations to experiencing the adrenaline rush of a live auction, every aspect of my journey has been instrumental in shaping my passion for art and its dynamic environment.
