Initially educated by his uncle in the natural sciences, Cornelius Varley began to develop as an artist around 1800, when he accompanied his older brother, watercolourist John Varley (1778-1842), on a tour of Wales. During his career he depicted many Welsh landscapes such as this one as well as classical scenes and views of the Thames. Varley was also an inventor of scientific instruments, notably the graphic telescope which he exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851.
