A JAPANESE IRON TSUBA (HAND GUARD) OF AORI GATA (SADDLE BAG) FORM, CIRCA 1859

decorated on one side with two rats and a rice bale, the larger rat and rice bale carved, the smaller rat of applied shibuichi (silver/gold alloy), both rats with inlaid gold eyes, the verso with one small rat with inlaid gold eyes and a daikon (Japanese radish), both carved, two hitsu-ana (holes for the handles of utility knives) with shakudō (gold/copper alloy) plugs

The recto signed Hakuryushi Kiyotaka and kao (art signature), the verso inscribed Ansei (illegible) nen (1854-1859) Hitsuji Ki (late in the Year of the Goat); probably 1859.
